Heartbreak Hotel

By Linda MacDonald of Powell, Wyoming

Artist's Statement:
For this challenge, I chose "Heartbreak Hotel", the first song recorded by Elvis at RCA Victor in 1956. This classis song became number one on the Billboard Pop Singles Chart, the Country Chart and the Rhythm $ Blues Chart. Elvis Received co-songwriting credit, along with Tommy Durden and Mae Axton. Durden said he did not recognize the song after Elvis made changes to the tempo, phrasing, lyrics and overall sound. To me this song represents the "Elvis sound". It was my goal for the quilt to be simple, giving the feeling of being heartbroken and "all alone in the world." I wanted to portray the hotel with a Wyoming Building. I found a black & white picture of a building in Manville(east of Casper) which was then computer enhanced with color and lettering to turn it into the "Heartbreak Hotel". The "Lonely Street" leading to the hotel is paved with broken hearts. Hot-fix crystals were added to the night sky, and a music box adds authenticity with Elvis's voice and music as he originally recorded the song. Since the hotel is the focal point, Elvis was printed on see-through silk organza, putting him and his music in the background.

I've found a new place to dwell...

Down at the end of Lonely Street..

The back of this quilt has a pocket, with the song lyrics on a piece of paper in it.

When you press the broken heart, it plays Elvis singing Heartbreak Hotel! "Since my baby left me..."
