MARDI GRAS

By Lanny Murtihardjana of Jakarta, Indonesia

This is a log cabin quilt, with an appealing overall design and wonderful surprises throughout.

The individual logs are tiny, about 1/2 inch wide. The whole quilt is 54" x 66".

Lanny has used other fabrics besides cotton - there's quite a bit of silk in it. Beads give it subtle sparkle.

The borders have little 'rays' shot through them to the edge. The bindings are colorful reflections of the log strips. She has hand quilted it with varigated metallic thread!

Artists Statement

I chose the MARDI GRAS carnival as a theme for this colorful design. Your Rose Challenge pack was indeed a challenge for me, as I am more acquainted with subtle colors. In answer to your request, I added more than 20 kinds of fabric (including the color list on the selvage of the rose printed fabric which was too cute to throw away). To give more balance, I added a considerable amount of black, plus gleaming beads to add sparkle. This quilt consisting of 63 Log Cabin blocks (over 2,500 pieces) may be considered as a sampler, as none of the blocks are exactly alike. As a whole, this quilt has taught me something about life. Some days are bright, and some days are dark. As a human being, I'd rather have "a bed of roses" to live in, but if I do, my life would be unbalanced. That's why dark days are needed as well. For this quilt I'd like to quote part of the lyric sung by John Denver:
"Some days are Diamonds
Some days are stone
Some times the hard times
Won't leave me alone..."
