Jalyndsie

By Jane R. Neale of Powell, Wyoming

Her skin is made from velour.

She is standing in her watermelon patch, holding out the watermelon she's picked out.

She's cut into it, to show the watermelon meat.

She loves to let the dirt squish through her toes.

She wears her good luck necklace and her sun hat.

Artist's Statement

This little miss is standing in a colorful hand applique garden "patch" of melons and flowers, beside a white picket fence.

She proudly holds her treat.

Her velour mulatto body is soft (needle) sculptured with her clothing being a little frayed and stitched with many colored patches.

Her bulky yarn black hair has cut bangs and multiple braids held back with beads. Her hand quilted black/white/yellow hat brim is adorned with a folded fabric Akebia flower. Her brown eyes and smile show how excited she is. She calls herself Jalyndsie.

(Jalyndsie is a combination of letters from the names Linda and Jessie, quilting friends and neighbors who helped me start quilting, and my husband Lynn who patiently endures the constant clutter from my creative projects.)
